Class Registration for Students

Almost all students will manually register for classes on Vergil during assigned appointment times. You will need your UNI and UNI password to log in. You can review the Academic Calendar for scheduled course registration windows, or check with your school.

Some classes may be blocked from web registration and require written or electronic approval. Vergil will indicate this when you try to register. If you are not able to register for a class through Vergil, check with the school for the proper procedure.

Registration Instructions

Registration for each term occurs during scheduled windows the semester prior. Within these periods, you will be assigned specific registration appointment times. For continuing students, your appointment times will generally be available on Vergil two weeks prior to the registration period, but specific registration instructions are announced by each school in advance of each registration period.

Students often register by hierarchy during registration periods as established by each school. Some schools determine appointment distributions by class standing, others by random selection. Certain cohorts of students may receive priority registration appointments when deemed appropriate by their school or program.

The Office of the University Registrar adheres to each school’s guidelines for setting registration appointments.

You must be registered for at least one class prior to the first day of classes each term. Otherwise, you may be charged a late registration fee.

Classes  in Vergil  may have an Autofill or Instructor Managed Wait List. Students will be notified once they have transitioned from the wait list to the class Roster.

Autofilled Wait List

Class sections with autofill wait lists will allow students to register until all seats are filled and the class status is set to Full. Then, the wait list will activate and students will be automatically registered for the  class as seats become available in the order that they originally joined the wait list.

To join an Autofill Wait List students should:

  1. Search for the course of interest(e.g., CLMT5130U001)
  2. Click on the class section to Expand the class information window.
  3. Click ‘Join Wait List’
  4. Review all waitlisted classes via the Student Planner and My Schedule/Registration pages in Vergil(Optional)

Instructor Managed Wait Lists

Instructor Managed Wait Lists require that  all students join the wait list. Some classes may ask for students to upload a file or answer a prompt before being placed on the wait list.  Once on the wait list, an administrator or instructor will approve or deny waitlisted students into the class.

To join an Instructor Managed Wait List students should:

  1. Search for the course of interest(e.g., CLMT5130U001)
  2. Click on the class section to Expand the class information window.
  3. Click ‘Join Wait List’ or ‘Apply to Join Wait List’
  4. (If required) submit the application materials outlined in the wait list message section.
  5. Click on ‘Join Wait’ list at the base of the window
  6. Review all waitlisted classes via the Student Planner and My Schedule/Registration pages in Vergil(Optional).

More context and information can be found on the Joining and Applying to Wait Lists and Instructor/Department Managed Wait Lists portions of the SIS help site.

Students can add and/or drop courses using Vergil during the Change-of-Program Period. Visit our Change-of-Program Period page to learn more about changing your course registration.

Registration Adjustment Forms submitted to the Student Service Center in 210 Kent Hall, to [email protected], or to [email protected] must have proper approval signatures to be accepted.

These forms will not be accepted if the class is available for registration using Vergil, or if the request is to bypass a wait list without an instructor's approval.

Students in the MD program at VP&S use a system called Oasis for course registration. MD students can contact their program for further information about accessing and using Oasis.

Additionally, students in the following programs are pre-registered for courses and do not participate in manual registration at designated appointment times:

  • All programs at College of Dental Medicine
  • Psychoanalysis certificates at Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research

If you are not in one of the programs mentioned above, you should proceed to use Vergil to register for classes at your assigned appointment times.

CUIMC students should contact their individual schools or programs for more detailed information about registration requirements and procedures, especially those involving cross-registration with other schools.
